Cristiano Ronaldo's sending off against Valencia was harsh at best as the Juventus' man's first game in the Champions League for his new club didn't go according to plan. One journalist has a theory why he got sent off.

When you first start a new job you've got to put in more effort than you ever will after. No one is ever even a couple of days late in the first few weeks unless you literally can't help it, you never put a foot wrong and you're nice to everyone.

After a certain amount of time you can get away with slacking off a little, usually after you've passed your probation and it's harder to sack you, but right at the start everything's got to be perfect.

I suppose when your employer has forked out nearly £90 million on you then there's a chance you can get away with a little more at the start. Which is fortunate for Cristiano Ronaldo because things haven't started great for him.

After a bit of a fallow period he did open his goal scoring last weekend but his Champions League debut on Tuesday night then saw him sent off in controversial fashion as he seemed to tug Jeison Murillo's hair.

Now one Spanish journalist has come up with a cracking conspiracy theory for the red card. According to Edu Aguirre, speaking to El Chiringuito, UEFA are exacting a vendetta against Ronaldo for him missing their awards gala earlier this season.

It was last month, at the draw for the Champions League draw, that UEFA handed out their best player of the year award and it went to Luka Modric but there was uproar that Ronaldo dodged the awards.

Agent Jorge Mendes wasn't having the result, saying, "Simply ridiculous. Football is played within the four lines and there, Cristiano Ronaldo won. He scored 15 goals, carried Real Madrid on his back to conquer the Champions League once again. It's simply ridiculous, shameful."

It was pretty disrespectful of Ronaldo not to turn up, especially as his former teammate won the award, but somehow I doubt that UEFA want to purposely have him sent off as punishment.

The Portugal forward will miss the next Champions League game against Young Boys.
