Deportivo Cali player Juan Sebastian Quintero was attacked on his way back from a game and the failed assassination attempt was taken out by a man wearing a tracksuit of the player's team.

The word 'supporters' tends to mean you support the team and the players but 'fan' makes far more sense in that they're fanatical so when they go a bit mad about their team losing it makes more sense.

One fan in Colombia took his fandom a little too far. After Deportivo Cali's 1-0 loss against Deportivo Pasto player Juan Sebastian Quintero approached the players car, pointed a gun at the player and said, 'I killed you, son of a b*tch.'

The 23 year old explained the incident telling reporters, "I was getting to my flat when I felt someone knocking on my window and the person with the gun was there ready to shoot me.

"It took me two or three seconds to react and I accelerated.

"He just knocked on the window, pointed the gun at me and said, 'I killed you, son of a b*tch'.

"The only thing I saw was a Deportivo Cali tracksuit. Who did it and what happened are being investigated.

"The shot hit the door and my brother and I got away unharmed, luckily.

"These things cannot happen in football. Making an attempt on someone's life, people with family, mothers, fathers and for some of my teammates, children."

Quintero, along with fellow teammates Nicolás Benedetti and Jeison Angulo, revealed that they'd received threatening messages but the attacked player said they were just 'normal' messages that players receive on social media and they'd been deleted.

During the match players had been attacked by fans in a far less harmful manner as fans greeted the loss by pelting the men on the pitch with eggs.

Fanatical definitely seems like the right description.
