Sandro Tonali given greenlight to play for Newcastle after being questioned by authorities over alledged illegal betting

Sandro Tonali will be allowed to play for Newcastle United this weekend

Newcastle United will be able to field Sandro Tonali this weekend if they want to.

Last week, it was reported that Tonali, along with Aston Villa player Nicolo Zaniolo were questioned by authorities in Italian over alleged illegal betting.

Since then, there have been rumours about Tonali’s immediate future with Newcastle as it was unsure whether any potential bans from Italy would be transferred to the United Kingdom.

According to The Chronicle, Newcastle have been told they are able to play Tonali for their Premier League clash against Crystal Palace this weekend.

Speaking ahead of Italy’s Euro 2024 qualifier against England at Wembley, manager Luciano Spalletti said: “It was a difficult night when you have to get results there is always anxiety, but this was a different night, with a lot of bitterness over what happened.

“The whole squad is close to Tonali and Zaniolo, we're very sorry for them. We will continue to be close to them even afterwards. For now, they have the spotlight on them.”

Shortly after the news was reported, a statement from the Italian Federation said: “The Federation announces that, in the late afternoon of today, the Public Prosecutor's Office of Turin has notified investigative acts to footballers Sandro Tonali and Nicolò Zaniolo, currently meeting with the national team at the Federal Technical Center of Coverciano.

“Regardless of the nature of the acts, considering that in this situation the two players are not in the necessary condition to face the commitments scheduled in the coming days, the Federation has decided, also to protect them, to allow them to return to their respective clubs”.
