Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in talks over surprise offer to return to football management after over two years

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in talks over surprise offer to return to football management after over two years

It would be a return to management.

Former Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is in talks over a surprise offer to return to football management.

Solskjaer has been out of work since being sacked by United in November 2021, after a 4-1 defeat at Watford.

However, the 50-year-old Champions League winner could imminently be back on the touchline should reports be believed.

According to Fotbollskanalen, Solskjaer is in the running to become the next Sweden manager, upon the resignation of Janne Andersson after his side’s final Euro 2024 qualifying clash.

Having finished third in their group, Sweden have failed to qualify for the European Championship for the first time since Euro 1996.

And it has been said Solskjaer is among a list of candidates to succeed Andersson, despite the former Cardiff manager never played or worked in Sweden.

However, Solskjaer doesn't appear to be Sweden's preferred choice, with ex-Aston Villa skipper Olof Mellberg and Australia women's coach Tony Gustavsson also reportedly high up on their shortlist.

Meanwhile, Blackburn manager Jon Dahl Tomasson - Denmark's joint all-time top scorer - is also thought to be under consideration.

While Solskjaer has never worked in Sweden he has a good knowledge of Scandinavian football having previously coached at Molde in his native Norway.

Speaking in September, Solskjaer revealed how he has turned down offers to return to football, including two from the Saudi Pro League.

Solskjaer told The Athletic: "I’ve had offers. The latest two are from Saudi Arabia.

"My best friend, who is also my agent, goes through the offers.

"If you’ve been the manager of Manchester United, you can have your own requirements for what you want to work with."

Solskjaer was handed the United job permanently in March 2019, after a successful spell on an interim basis, and led the club to the Europa League final in 2021 and a second-place Premier League finish.

However, he was sacked after a run of poor results early in the 2021-22 campaign.
