Jadon Sancho's moment to forget, Raphael Varane set for new role? - 4 things you missed in Man Utd vs Leeds

Manchester United made a positive start to their pre-season schedule with a comfortable 2-0 win over rivals Leeds United.

Academy prospects Noam Emeran and Joe Hugill scored to secure victory for United at the Ullevaal Stadion in Oslo, Norway.

United boss Erik ten Hag named a strong side for the first half which included new signing Mason Mount as well as experienced first-team regulars Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Jadon Sancho.

After a goalless first half, Ten Hag changed his entire team at the interval and was rewarded with an impressive second-half performance from his youthful replacements.

Here are four incidents from the match which you may have missed.

Touching tribute to McQueen

Ahead of kick-off, Manchester United and Leeds paid tribute to the late Gordon McQueen, who played for both clubs.

McQueen died last month at the age of 70 after what his family described as "a very cruel battle against dementia".

Captains Varane and Liam Cooper wore No 5 shirts featuring McQueen's name ahead of kick-off, while a minute's applause was also held for the former Scotland international.

His daughter, Sky Sports presenter Hayley McQueen, took to social media after the match to thank supporters.

"Thank you @LUFC & @ManUtd on MUTV for the wonderful pre-match tribute to my dad in Norway both captains wearing McQueen & his number 5 too. Seems almost fate his two former clubs play each other so close after his passing," she tweeted.

Fred missing for United

Brazilian midfielder Fred was part of the United squad that travelled to Norway for the match. But there was no sign of him on the team-sheet, raising fears the Brazil international had suffered an injury in pre-season.

Manchester United later released a statement to confirm his omission was "purely a precaution and because he is managing his workload, after returning for training at Carrington last week".

Varane set for new role?

With Harry Maguire and Bruno Fernandes not part of the travelling squad, experienced defender Varane was named as United captain for the first half.

Ten Hag is yet to confirm who will lead the team this season amid the ongoing uncertainty over Maguire's Old Trafford future.

Fernandes was expected to take the armband from the England international - with Varane, Luke Shaw and Casemiro potentially named as his vice-captains, should Maguire leave the club this summer.

But could Varane stake a claim to become club captain instead of Fernandes? Watch this space.

Sancho's moment to forget

Jadon Sancho started the match up front for United in a 'false nine' position alongide youngsters Amad Diallo and Omari Forson.

But he failed to make the most of his opportunity with a lacklustre performance during the first-half. Sancho struggled to have an impact on the game and wasted a golden opportunity to score inside the area after allowing the ball to roll under his foot.

Ten Hag will be watching his performances in pre-season closely.
