Man Utd youngster 'set to sign new contract' after impressing Erik ten Hag, he's a star of the future

He's set to be handed a new deal.

Manchester United youngster Joe Hugill is set to sign a new contract at the club after impressing Erik ten Hag, according to reports.

The 20-year-old is yet to make his first-team debut for United but was been included in the match-day squad to face Everton back in November, where he was an unused substitute during the 3-0 win.

Hugill was also named on the bench for United's Champions League clashes with both Galatasaray and Bayern Munich, prior to the club dropping out of the competition after finishing rock bottom of Group A.

According to the Manchester Evening News, United are now looking to secure the long-term future of the young prospect, who arrived at Old Trafford in a deal worth £300,000 from Sunderland's academy in 2020 after receiving interest from both Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur at the time.

Hugill has regularly been a part of first-team training throughout the season and is understood to have impressed the United boss during his limited involvement with the senior squad.

His current deal at the club is set to expire in 2024, with the report going on to claim that he is expected to sign a new contract at the club before they determine the next move for him in his development.

United are considering a loan move for Hugill after his new deal is announced, as they plan to determine his position amongst the senior squad next summer.

Ten Hag is currently in desperate need of reinforcements in the attacking areas at United, with Rasmus Hojlund, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial all struggling to find their finest goalscoring form when given the nod in the striker position.

Martial, who has been sidelined through illness in recent weeks, looks set to leave the club next summer at the end of his contract, which could pave the way for Hugill to make an impact in the first team if his loan move is successful.

Promoting youth is also a financially viable way United can solve their goal-scoring problems within the squad, with Financial Fair Play (FFP) likely to limit their spending given the summer arrivals of players such as Mason Mount, Hojlund and Andre Onana.
