Fans baffled as Andre Onana named in Premier League Team of the Season so far

Andre Onana has had a difficult start at Manchester United

Fans have been left baffled by Andre Onana’s inclusion in the Premier League’s Team of the Season so far.

During the summer transfer window, Manchester United parted ways with David de Gea after the Spaniard’s contract expired at the end of the 22/23 season.

As a result, Erik ten Hag brought in Onana from Inter Milan in a deal worth a reported £47.2 million.

Onana’s start to life at Old Trafford has been far from ideal as he has been criticised for his positioning and handling skills after a few questionable moments.

Over the last few weeks, there have been calls that United should bring in another goalkeeper due to Onana’s performances.

However, despite the noise around him, Onana was named in WhoScored?’s Premier League Team of the Season so far.

Onana has been given a rating of 6.89 out of 10, having kept the joint most clean sheets (6) in the league alongside Everton and England number-one Jordan Pickford.

Reacting to Onana’s inclusion, one fan said: “I don't know how you calculate your ratings but any stat that has Romero over Saliba and Onana as the best GK needs to be binned ASAP.”

Another tweeted: “Onana in goal? Wow shows how stats can be deceiving.”

A third fan added: “This is the problem with team of the season when it's stats.”

Speaking about his goalkeeper this month, United boss Ten Hag said: “If you analyse it well then you see he is the second-best goalkeeper in the Premier League based on stats, so his expected defending goals is the second best in the Premier League.

“He's doing well. Also he knows that in the Champions League he makes some mistakes, but all over you see the first five months he is doing particularly well.”

The Dutchman continued: “You have seen how he reacted to a bad performance like in Munich. At Burnley he was outstanding.

“He is a strong character, he is a personality and he will deal with it.”

Speaking after United’s recent 0-0 draw against Liverpool, Onana said: “At Manchester United you're going to get that, I have to be ready for everything.

“I'm used to be playing big games with high intensity. Like I said, it was nice to play here today. We played a good opponent but we showed we have good players. Being Manchester United you must try to win.”
