Joel Matip sends brutal response to Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp after penalty question asked

Liverpool defender Joel Matip issued a brutal response to Jurgen Klopp after asking why he had not taken a penalty for the club yet.

Liverpool defender Joel Matip has issued a brutal response to Jurgen Klopp after his boss asked him why he had never taken a penalty.

Matip, 32, has enjoyed a successful spell in Liverpool since arriving from Schalke back in 2016 on a free transfer, playing a vital role in the Reds teams that have secured one Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, Super Cup and a League Cup.

They are trophies that, in some cases, could have gone in a very different direction during the penalty shoot-outs that unfolded across the 2021/22 League Cup final and 2019/20 Super Cup final.

On both occasions, more than 11 penalties were taken, with Liverpool ultimately winning the shoot-outs. However, Matip did not feature in either of the nail-biting experiences, with the defender limited to a role on the sidelines as he watched his teammates step-up to the spot.

Speaking to Sky Sports in a penalty shoot-out special which featured Klopp and Matip, the Liverpool boss asked why the Cameroonian international had never taken a spot-kick. "I've never shot a penalty in my life so," he said.

To which Klopp replied: "How did you do that? We have had two finals with 11 or more penalties!"

With Matip quickly replying by saying: "You always took me off whenever we were close to penalties! You were so proud about it."

Matip will be helpless once again if his teams are faced with another shoot-out in the near future, after suffering an ACL injury which is set to see him miss the rest of the season.

With his current deal at Anfield set to expire next summer, it is unclear whether or not Matip has played his last game for the Reds.

The club continue to be linked with replacements for the veteran such as Sporting Lisbon's Goncalo Inacio and Bayer Leverkusen, Piero Hincapie.
