Fans divided over Eric Dier interview after Bayern Munich debut

Fans divided over Eric Dier interview after Bayern Munich debut

Fans were split over Dier's interview.

Eric Dier has divided fans with an interview he gave following his Bayern Munich debut on Wednesday.

Earlier this month Dier joined Bayern on loan from Tottenham until the end of the season, with the Bundesliga giants holding an option to make the move permanent when his Spurs contract expires this summer.

The 30-year-old joined former Tottenham teammate Harry Kane in Germany, who completed a £100 million move to the Allianz Arena last summer.

Dier made his Bayern debut on Wednesday in a 1-0 win against Union Berlin, coming off the bench at half-time in place of the injured Dayot Upamecano.

The England international looked comfortable in his new surroundings, although that's not what fans were talking about after the match.

Dier divided football fans online thanks to a post-match interview he gave with Sky Sports, in which he spoke in English with what sounded like a German accent.

"It's a very proud moment for me obviously to make my debut for this club, it's a proud moment for me and my family," Dier said.

"I really enjoyed it. I'm happy to make my debut in this stadium [Allianz Arena] it's even nicer. I'm really happy with how I've settled, hopefully I can continue to help the team."

Social media users quickly picked up on the Germanic twang in Dier's voice, comparing it to the time Joey Barton spoke with a French accent during his time at Marseille, and when Steve McClaren spoke English with a Dutch accent.

One said: "Bro has developed a German accent after one game."

Another joked, "He's picked up the language so brilliantly," while another said "Thomas Tuchel rubbed off on him quick! Sounds like him!"

Another commented: "Tuchel saw something in him. Now we know what."

However, some sympathised with Dier, and pointed out that, owing to his upbringing in Portugal, he has always spoken English with a foreign accent.

"He has always spoken like this. He grew up in Portugal and speaks multiple languages," one fan said.

Another suggested that there was a practical reason for Dier's German accent, saying: "They tell you to speak with a German accent, helps the less experienced English speakers."
