England fans fume at Gareth Southgate's 'pathetic' Jordan Henderson decision, they've had enough

England fans fume at Gareth Southgate's 'pathetic' Jordan Henderson decision, they've had enough

Jordan Henderson made his Ajax debut this weekend.

England fans are fuming at Gareth Southgate over what he did during this weekend.

A host of English players were in action on Saturday as the likes of Ollie Watkins, Ross Barkley and Kieran Trippier, among others, starred for their clubs.

Watkins, Barkley and Trippier all scored for their respective sides in the Premier League.

Jordan Henderson also featured on Saturday as he made his Ajax debut against PSV Eindhoven following his move from Al Ettifaq.

And Southgate travelled to the Netherlands to watch him in the flesh to the dismay of England fans on social media.

People couldn't believe the 53-year-old's thinking behind watching the former Liverpool captain play.

They referenced Fikayo Tomori and Chris Smalling as they slammed the England boss.

One X user exclaimed: "18 English players featured in the Newcastle vs Luton Game, 12 in Everton vs Tottenham, 10 in Brighton vs Crystal Palace, 5 in Burnley vs Fulham and 12 in Sheffield United vs Aston Villa yet Gareth Southgate travelled to watch Jordan Henderson play for Ajax. Pathetic."

A second tweeted: "Complete waste of time for Gareth to go and watch him since we know he’ll pick him regardless of club form."

A third questioned: "How times did he go to Italy when Smalling was having that decent run at Roma or to watch Tomori at Milan. I'd guess at single figures."

A fourth added: "It’s genuinely infuriating. If you don’t know the kind of player Henderson is by this point, maybe you shouldn’t be managing England, even if he did by some miracle deserve a call up."

Another commented: "Ross Barkley over Henderson any day."

After the match, Henderson, who played the full game against PSV, said: "I just found out Gareth Southgate was here tonight, hopefully he feels like he picked a good game to watch."

Southgate continued to name Henderson in his England squads after the player moved to Saudi Arabia last summer.

The 33-year-old's decision to return to Europe strengthens his case to be selected in the Three Lions squad for Euro 2024 this summer.
