Chris Hughton 'attacked' at Ghana's team hotel after AFCON defeat

Chris Hughton 'attacked' at Ghana's team hotel after AFCON defeat

Former Newcastle and Brighton boss Chris Hughton was reportedly attacked after Ghana lost their opening AFCON game.

Former Newcastle and Brighton manager Chris Hughton has been reportedly been attacked following Ghana's shock defeat to Cape Verde on Sunday.

The Black Stars lost their opening Africa Cup of Nations Group B fixture after Garry Rodrigues scored a dramatic 92nd minute winner.

And the shock result is said to have lead to unsavoury scenes when the team returned to their hotel in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.

According to journalist Saddick Adams, a Ghana fan assaulted Hughton.

Some other Ghanaians are believed to have stepped in to help the former Republic of Ireland international.

The alleged assailant, who has not yet been identified, was then apparently handed over to the authorities.

However, to add to the confusion, another journalist, Muftawu Nabila Abdulai, claims there was no arrest and that the individual did not attack Hughton and merely used foul language.

This report states that he was taken away by security but not by police.

Ghana are back in action on Thursday as they take on an Egypt side who were heading towards defeat to Mozambique before Mo Salah popped up with a late penalty that secured a point.

Hughton, who also been in charge of Norwich and Nottingham Forest, was appointed Ghana boss following a spell as a technical advisor.

He got the job after a disappointing World Cup campaign resulted in the resignation of Otto Addo.

"We are incredibly, hugely disappointed with the result," Hughton said after the result.

"We came into the game with a game plan.

"We changed the way of playing, the system a bit so that we could start on the front foot.

"We thought the team that were put out was certainly a more offensive team. This was our intention.

"I think it rocked us the goal that we conceded but I thought we got back into the game.

"At that stage it looked like we could go on and win it. We are hugely, hugely disappointed with our result."
