France beat Australia after a deflected lob from Paul Pogba put Les Bleus ahead and eventually win the game late on - but it could have been so much different.

In quick-fire succession, Antoine Griezmann fired France ahead with a coolly taken penalty, and just moments later, the Australian's earned their own penalty, after defender Samuel Umtiti strangely used his hands to clear away an in-swinging free-kick.

He had all the time in the world but the Barcelona centre-back decided to take a massive gamble by using his hand to snub Australia of having any possible chance of equalising.

But, in turn, the side from down under did level the scoring, as the referee awarded a penalty to them for the 24-year-old's odd decision.

Online users are flabbergasted as to why he used his hands.

Umtiti hit the news recently after he signed a new deal with Barcelona that has with it a huge $500 million release contract.

As for France, they can consider themselves lucky for nabbing the win, after some brilliant stout defending from Australia. They face Peru and a more testy match against Denmark next. They should easily go through, but they need to up their game if they are to stand any chance of making it to the final.
