The Reaction Of 25,000 Sunderland Fans After Relegation Was Confirmed Is Heartbreaking

What a terrible plight.

Somehow, in circumstances that would be considered unbelievable if certain ridiculous events of the season hadn't occurred, Sunderland have tumbled even further down the English football system, getting relegated to League One after losing 2-1 to Burton Albion on Saturday.

Rooted bottom of the table, they played their relegation rivals in a match which was supposed to be a last hoorah for the Black Cats. It was the last chance to get themselves out of the unprecedented muddle they are in.

However, having gone ahead, the side capitulated in the last ten minutes. Former England and Sunderland striker Darren Bent levelled for the away side before Liam Boyce delivered the killer blow in injury time.

25,475 were in attendance at the Stadium of Light - a stadium that fills a capacity of 49,000. And, quite rightly, as the final whistle blew, the noise that came from the home support was poisonous.

Journalist Simon Bird captured the moments just after the final whilst on camera. But watching isn't needed, you just need to listen to grasp that the the supporters are way past pantomime booing stage,a collective sound of total dejection and despair filled the stadium.

It's a shame that the two-time FA Cup and six-time league title winning club have fallen this low, but the events during this season have made the end result slightly less shocking: Darren Gibson on camera admitting at a wedding that most the squad didn't care, before having his contract terminated for driving over the limit; and the supporter that got so drunk at a home match he thought to have defecated on a seat, afterwards insisting that he just urinated.

Do the Sunderland fans deserve this level of apathy?
