Amid rumours linking Pepe Reina with move back to the Premier League, the former Liverpool goalkeeper has signed for AC Milan, with the club announcing the transfer of the 35-year-old with a tweet.

Reina is a fan favourite among the Reds and enjoyed a brilliant spell at Napoli, the side which gave Juventus a run for their money last season and finished second in Serie A.

His performances for the southern Italian side were so good that Reina was called up to the Spain squad for the World Cup. He was third choice, behind David de Gea and Kepa Arrizabalaga, and did not feature in a single minute of football at the tournament in Russia, as the Spaniards were knocked out of the competition in the group stages to the host nation.

There were reports that his former boss, Rafa Benitez, was interested in bringing the veteran goalkeeper to Newcastle United, when the side had just Robbie Elliot and Karl Darlow to choose from in their ranks, with Tim Krul having fallen out of favour with the manager.

But that rumour came to nothing in the end and Reina has now signed up to Milan, where the club will be hoping to build on the positivity that came about when they made club legend Gennaro Gattuso their manager.

Liverpool would have loved to have seen the veteran keeper back in the side - but they have moved on to greener pastures, AS Roma goalie Alisson making the move to Anfield this summer for a world record-breaking fee for a goalkeeper. It's a true statement of intent for the side, who are looking to build on what was a magical season under manager Jurgen Klopp last can

He has joined them in America where Milan will face off against Manchester United, Tottenham and Barcelona in the International Champions competition.
