Roma owner James Pallotta was forced to sell Mohamed Salah over the summer. The Eyptian King had just two years on his contract and told the club that he wanted to leave.
He cost Liverpool £36.9 million in the end, a bargain for a player who's on 41 goals for the season, was pivotal in the Reds Champions League progression to the semi-final and won the PFA Player of the Year Award.
Via the Liverpool Echo, Roma owner James Pallotta told ESPN: "Well, when you look at it now, you can say it's an unbelievable bargain. The issue at the time was that when (director of football) Monchi came in, Salah wanted to leave, he had a year [sic] left on his contract, so in another year you'd get nothing."
"He wanted to go back (to the Premier League) and prove himself, which he certainly has done. We can't tell you that anybody else was calling for Salah at anywhere near that kind of price, so there's a lot of teams that have missed out on the great play he's had this year," he said.
Despite this, Liverpool owner John W Henry was initially hesitant about signing the attacker of the price-tag.
"I told him (Henry) that because he was sort of bitching a little about, "Did we overpay? I think we overpaid," and I said "I'll buy you lunch."
Not bad: less than £40 million for Salah and a free lunch. If only other deals last year were as successful.
