Benfica saw their team bus attacked by their own fans on Thursday night after drawing 0-0 at home to Tondela - with two players going to hospital.

The Portuguese side's bus was attacked with stones on a Lisbon highway while driving back from their first game since the Primeira Liga's restart.

German midfielder Julian Weigl and Serbian Andrija Zivkovic were hit by shrapnel in the attack, forcing the players to hospital as a precaution.

Benfica have since released a statement condemning the attack and will be working with authorities to identify the attackers.

"We inform that, as a matter of precaution, players Julian Weigl and Zivkovic were immediately taken to Hospital da Luz to be observed, following the shrapnel that hit them," the statement read.

"Benfica denounce the criminal stoning the bus of its players was victim to.

"We guarantee total collaboration with authorities to whom we appeal for the greatest effort to be made in identifying the offenders responsible for these criminal acts."

Fans are not allowed in the Estadio de la Luz due to coronavirus restrictions but many still congregated outside the stadium during the game.

Weigl joined Benfica from Borussia Dortmund in January while Zivkovic has been at the club since 2016.

Benfica are currently level at the top with bitter rivals Porto on 60 points with both sides having played 25 games.

Porto returned to action on Wednesday night with a 2-1 loss to Famalicao.
