Ireland Under 17 Goalkeeper Sent Off In Penalty Shoot Out

The keeper came off his line during the under 17 Euros and got a second yellow for his troubles.

There's few crueler ways of being knocked out of a tournament than on a penalty shoot out. But what if your goalkeeper was given a second yellow card during the spot kicks and you went out after that?

As an Englishman of a certain age nothing has me waking up in cold sweats quite like a penalty shoot-out. The first two tournaments I can remember as a youngster, Euro 96 and the World Cup in 1998, saw England go out on spot kicks to Germany and Argentina respectively.

For Ireland, despite crashing out of the World Cup in 2002 on a penalty shoot out to Spain, the moment that still blots their thoughts when it comes to World Cups is Thierry Henry's handball.

However now the Irish will have another moment of controversy to question, and once again it'll be rightly so.

This time the moment comes in a penalty shoot out of tonight's Under 17 Euros quarter final against Netherlands. After a 1-1 draw the game went to a shootout during which Irish goalkeeper Jimmy Corcoran was given a second yellow for coming off his line:

It's ridiculously harsh on the poor keeper. Even if the decision is correct according to the rules has anyone seen a goalkeeper given a yellow during a shoot-out for this before? And when they're already on a yellow too.

Earlier in the game Liam van Gelderen had given Netherlands the lead not long after the hour mark but Ireland hit back almost immediately through Troy Parrott.

No one could have imagined the controversy that would come after.

I hate shoot-outs!
