Cristiano Ronaldo Missed A Simple Tap-In, This Afternoon

It's just not been his season

He may have scooped his fifth Ballon d'Or and second consecutive FIFA The Best award recently, but Cristiano Ronaldo is enduring an unusually rough time of things in front of goal for Real Madrid in La Liga, this season.

While a record of 16 goals in 24 games this term is still an excellent return, only four of those efforts have come in La Liga, in which the Portugal captain has made 14 appearances.

Real lost even more ground on Barcelona at the top of La Liga following a shock 1-0 home reverse to Villarreal, this afternoon. But things could have been much, much different for the Spanish and European champions had Ronaldo buried a routine tap-in.

The goal scoring phenom, who has broken every goal scoring record possible since arriving at the Bernabeu in an £80 million move from Manchester United, nine years ago, somehow failed to convert when positioned right in front of goal.

Of course, Villarreal 'keeper Sergio Asenjo deserves a ton of credit for his instinctive stop but when you see the ball land at Ronaldo's feet inside the six yard box, you expect the net to be bulging not long afterwards.

The defeat leaves Real in fourth place in the La Liga table, 16 points behind Barcelona, with pressure now heaping on manager Zinedine Zidane despite, y'know, him winning the last two Champions Leagues and last season's La Liga title.

The Frenchman could really do with his Portuguese goal machine rediscovering his finest form soon, especially with a monumental two legged clash with Paris Saint-Germain on the horizon in the Champions League round of 16.
