Lazio Pay Email Scammers €2 Million For Stefan de Vrij

There's nothing more wonderful in the world than the spam folder in emails, lord knows how much utter nonsense lives there but perhaps Lazio need better filters on their inbox after falling for a scam email and paying out €2 million because of it.

Somehow I feel like spam emails are less prevalent now than when I was younger. That's either because they just are, I have a better filter on my email or I go on less questionable websites, I'll let you decide.

No longer am I likely to be emailed from a Nigerian prince needing my help to sort out his finances or receive an offer for a product that will help me in an area we could all do with a bit of help with, my own finances of course...

However whilst most of us are pretty savvy these days when it comes to which emails are legit and which ones are asking for bank details we definitely shouldn't be giving that's not the case for Serie A side Lazio.

According to Italian newspaper Il Tempo the Rome side received an email from 'hackers' pretending to be Feyenoord asking for the final €2 million of the Stefan de Vrij deal. Lazio paid the money but Feyenoord didn't get the payment and denied any knowledge of the email!

That's some grade A scamming right there!

Prosecutors have apparently traced the money to the Netherlands, so it's not too embarrassing for the Italians, but alas the accounts had nothing to do with the Eredivisie club so they just signed over a couple of mil to the wrong people, ouch.

De Vrij moved to the Stadio Olimpico after impressing at the 2014 World Cup and was rumoured to join Dutch manager Louis van Gaal at Manchester United that summer but chose Lazio instead.

Pretty much ever since making his move to the Biancocelesti he has been rumoured to make that move to Old Trafford however with his contract up this summer and no signs of an extension he is also being linked with Inter Milan and Barcelona, amongst others.

Still he could end up being part of a bank transfer to Nigeria.
