Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang Shows Why Panenka Penalties Aren't Always A Good Idea

The Borussia Dortmund forward decided to go for one of the most skilfull penalties you can attempt, it didn't work.

There's a reason that everyone goes mental when someone scores a panenka penalty, it's because they aren't actually that easy to score. As Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang showed they look even more spectacular when you get them wrong.

The thing with a penalty is that you've basically been given the easiest possible opportunity to score after being illegally stopped from having a chance to do that in the first place.

12 yards, one-on-one with the keeper, dead centre of the goal, no defender can come near you and the goalkeeper has to stay on his line until you've kicked it. Pretty much no one should balls it up unless the keeper makes a great save.

However despite everything being in their favour strikers often unnecessarily add in extra hurdles for themselves by taking a pause in their run-up or hitting them in weird and wonderful ways.

The most famous of those is of course the panenka, the little chip down the middle. Wonderful when it goes right, like Zinedine Zidane in the World Cup final, hideous when it doesn't, like Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang today:

The miss didn't end up having too much impact on Dortmund as they continue their pursuit of the Bundesliga title in an attempt to end the monopoly that Bayern Munich currently hold on the German championship.

Peter Bosz' side went on to win the game against Augsburg 2-1 with Shinji Kagawa and Andriy Yarmolenko getting the goals in the first half as Dortmund extended their lead over Hoffenheim to five points.

Fans panned the Gabonese striker's performance:

Just smack it lads!
