David Beckham would be 'up all night' doing unexpected hobby while on England duty

David Beckham would often 'chill out in his room' on England duty and play with the toy.

Ben Foster says former England teammate David Beckham would often go into his room and play with LEGO all night when on international duty.

In the past, former Manchester United and Real Madrid midfielder Beckham has opened up about his love for LEGO building; a hobby that many people take part in to reduce stress and anxiety.

"I grew up making LEGO when I was eight or nine years old," he said. "Actually I continue it and Victoria always laughs at me, she’ll come down at like two o’clock in the morning and I’ll be trying to finish a piece off.

"She posted something the other day and I think she said because it was like 11 years and above, she was like: 'Really? You are still up at two o’clock in the morning doing 11 years and above LEGO?'"

Beckham has shared pictures of numerous LEGO projects over the years, including a Millennium Falcon, worth upwards of £500, and a Disney castle he built for daughter Harper Seven.

In 2017, he also built a 4,000 piece replica of Sleeping Beauty’s castle and more recently, he put together a 6,020 piece recreation of Hogwarts – a set that took him over 12 hours to build.

He also received a Star Wars starship in 2020, when he joined Jimmy Kimmel on his famous sofa.

And it turns out he was just as active with LEGO during his playing days, according to Ben Foster, who recently revealed that the former England captain would often relax with a LEGO set.

Speaking on the Fozcast podcast, Foster said: "He used to bring Lego sets to England. He would go into his room and just do Lego all night. It would proper chill him out.

"He would just sit there, do his Lego set, have a nice time. Lovely."

Back in 2014, psychologist Jon Sutton, who has previously written about the psychology of Lego, said the brick-building sets could help OCD sufferers.

Beckham has opened up about his obsessive-compulsive disorder in the past.

“I can see it being very therapeutic for someone with David’s personality,” Sutton told The Times.

“Lego is about making order out of chaos. You get the set out of the box, empty it onto the floor and start with this mess that you then have to carefully build piece by piece, following instructions.

“It’s the same methodical focus that David brought to repeatedly practising penalties and made him such a great player.”
