One of the great footballing derbies takes place today as the iconic San Siro plays host to the Milan derby pitting AC versus Internazionale.

The Milan derby used to be one of the Europeans biggest attractions with both sides comprised of some of the biggest names in the world but the fallen giants are rebuilding their dynasties as they bid to make a comeback on the footballing stage.

As they renew hostiles in the game billed as Derby della Madonnina, 11-years ago they played out a thrilling 4-3 encounter with Inter claiming a famous victory.

Inter raced to a three goal lead thanks to goals from Hernan Crespo, Dejan Stankovic and Zlatan Ibrahimovic before Clarence Seedorf replied. Materazzi then made it 4-1 as Alberto Gilardino and Kaka added late consolations.

Milan's legendary defence included Alessandro Nesta, Kakha Kaladze, Cafu with Paolo Maldini restricted to the bench not to mention boasting the likes of Seedorf, a prime-Kaka and Andrea Pirlo among others in the middle of the park.

Meanwhile their fierce rivals had an equally legendary back-line with the likes of Javier Zanetti and Ivan Cordaba as well as a feared strikeforce in Crespo and Ibrahimovic. Time to gawk - Check out the respective sides below:

WHAT. A. SIDE!

The Serie A circa 2006 were the days!

Back then Inter were on the verge of winning Serie A five times in a row, with three of those coming under Roberto Mancini and two coming under Jose Mourinho, who would also win the Champions League and Coppa Italia in his second season.

Milan would recapture the title the following season when Mourinho moved to Real Madrid but it has been downhill for both side since.

Juventus have become the most dominant side in Italy with Roma and Napoli becoming the Old Lady's closest rivals for the title. Italy and Europe needs stong Milan sides and everyone will be hoping the new Chinese owners at both clubs can turn things around.

Can Sunday's derby return things to where they were?
