“This has only just begun and, hopefully, we can help as many children as possible, with this modest bit of sand,” Panenka said.

Panenka has partnered up with the creative agency We are Xuxa for an incredible project.

The duo are turning old football kits into hospital gowns for sick children, who are able to wear them when they need it the most.

The brainchild for the project came from We are Xuxa co-founders Diego Lauton, Irene Labat and Fede Botella, with Panenka saying that they were "obliged to contribute to make an initiative like this a reality."

The Spanish football magazine posted on its website that the initiative moved ahead when the first set of robes were made in a workshop in Madrid.

After they were made, the gowns were delivered to the Hospital San Rafael and Panenka said that the reception has been "overwhelming."

We are Xuxa and Panenka also said that they have received a positive reception from people across several countries, as well as being contacted by clubs, hospitals and other associations.

The magazine and creative agency said that they would continue to process the different requests they have received from hospitals and health centres in June.

Once they've done that, they said that they would be looking to collect more football shirts from fans.

"This has only just begun and, hopefully, we can help as many children as possible, with this modest bit of sand. Once again, thank you all!" Panenka wrote.

As expected, fans love the initiative and have lauded Panenka and We are Xuxa for the project.

"This is absolutely fantastic," one user wrote on Instagram.

Someone else said: "Wow, that is amazing. What a great idea."

A third wrote: "Fantastic campaign and a brilliant cause. Great to see."

A fourth added: "That's brilliant and beautiful."

"Every day, in many hospitals, children face their hardest match," reads the caption for a promotional video.

"Illness is a scary rival. But it can be beaten.

"We've turned football shirts into hospital gowns.

"Because something great happens when we wear our team shirt. We become braver, stronger and more prepared to beat our opponent."
