Sebastian Vettel won the Monaco Grand Prix from teammate Kimi Raikkonen to extend his lead over Lewis Hamilton at the top of the drivers championship.

Raikkonen surprised most people by taking pole position from teammate, and drivers world championship leader, Sebastian Vettel on Saturday afternoon.

Knowing that Lewis Hamilton was so far down the track took huge pressure off the German and he easily defended his position from Valtteri Bottas going up the first corner.

After an easy start from the Prancing Horse they were able to start stretching their lead over the rest of the pack knowing full well that Hamilton would be struggling in the midfield.

Jenson Button's poor weekend in the car continued early as he and Pascal Wehrlein pitted early and nearly collided very early to put the pair well behind the rest of the pack.

After that though the race seriously calmed down to the point that it became a little boring in the mid point with Sergio Perez and Carlos Sainz in a battle for a top five place providing most of the excitement.

Bottas was first of the leaders to pit first as he attempted to take advantage of a possible undercut but his fellow win in the Ferrari was in a lap later to close it off.

However instead it was Vettel who benefitted from going into the garage last as he came out on lap 40 ahead of his teammate and into the lead, that he would never give up.

Esteban Ocon was having a frustrating weekend with the talented youngster getting a puncture midway through the race having not hit anything.

Hamilton was the last to pit and the move looked to have worked as exited the lane after 47 laps in seventh place, six up from his start.

Pascal Wehrlein's Sauber went into the wall leading into the tunnel as Jenson Button attempted to overtake, bringing out the safety car for the first time.

Weirdly during the safety car Marcus Ericsson's race ended at the first corner and as soon as the cars were released Stoffel Vandoorne crashed in the same place.

It ended McLaren's chance of a first point of the season with the Belgian running in 10th place. It opened the door for Force India's Sergio Perez.

But a collision between him and Daniil Kvyat retired the Toro Rosso and forced the Mexican to pit and take on a new set of tyres, denying him the chance at points.

However the day belonged to Vettel who was unbeatable from the moment he came out of the pits ahead of his teammate.

The gap between him and Hamilton in the drivers championship is now up to 25 points, a whole race win between them.

Will the Brit be able to comeback from this?
