Saul Canelo Alvarez will defend the Won WBA (Super), WBC, The Ring and lineal middleweight titles he won from Gennady Golovkin, and try to win the IBF title, when he takes on Daniel Jacobs on May 4th.

Canelo, the highest paid boxer in the history of the sport, announced the fight on his Twitter account and although the location of the fight is yet to be known it will take place on Cinco de Mayo weekend.

Alvarez captured his version of the middleweight world titles when he became the first man to beat Gennady Golovkin in September 2018 in a controversial rematch of their already controversial first fight from a year before.

The Mexican then moved up in weight to super middleweight in December to fight Britain's Rocky Fielding for the Liverpudlian's WBA (regular) title.

Canelo was successful, knocking Fielding to the mat four times in just three rounds before the fight was stopped, but will move back up in weight for his next fight.

There had been talk that the Mexican would face GGG for the third time for his next fight but instead he will attempt to capture one of the two middleweight titles he doesn't hold.

Jacobs lost his WBA (regular) title to Golovkin in March 2017, only his second career loss, in the Kazakh's closest fight until the pair with Canelo.

The American beat Serhiy Derevianchenko in October 2018 to win the vacant IBF title and his first defence will be against one of the best pound for pound fighters in the world.

"I'm happy to announce my next fight during the festive weekend of Cinco de Mayo," Alvarez said. "I will unify my middleweight titles against Daniel Jacobs on one of the two most important dates that belong to me. I have no doubt that I will be victorious and that I'll be one step away from becoming the undisputed middleweight world champion."

Should he beat Jacobs the Mexican would then need to defeat Demetrius Andrade to hold all four of the major organisations middleweight titles.
