McGregor and Mayweather: A Trash Talking History

McGregor and Mayweather: A Trash Talking History

With a fight set to be confirmed any day now, we look back at the pair's rivalry up until now

Conor Mcgregor has brought the UFC to new heights with the explosive fighting style and brash trash talk he has dished out to opponents before and after bouts inside the octagon and his feud with Floyd Mayweather is set to take the Lightweight champion into another stratosphere.

Both men have been firing shots at each other in interviews and on social media since early 2016, with discussions over a mega money fight between the pair reportedly underway and also being teased by Mcgregor on Twitter:

'Notorious' has hinted several times since his defeat of Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 in November that he was branching out from the UFC and the rumours surrounding a fight against Mayweather have refused to subside, ever since.

In 2016 the UFC Lightweight champion posted a mocked up poster of the fight on Instagram, captioned 'MMA vs Boxing', causing mass hysteria among fight fans.

Mcgregor has slated Mayweather on multiple occasions on his lack of technical skill in all areas, saying, "I look at him as a rookie in ten other areas. If you can box, what happens if I grab hold of your legs? If you put me face-to-face with Floyd Mayweather, I would kill him in less than 30 seconds".

The attempts to provoke the undefeated Mayweather seem to have worked as both men are constantly at each other's throats whenever they have a chance to vent in interviews or on their social media channels.

With the bad blood between them looking as if it will not be settled any time soon, both men are still to agree terms and conditions of the fight with early reports last May claiming that Mayweather would pocket $100 million while McGregor would only land $7 million which, in Mcgregor's eyes, was nowhere near enough.

A counter offer was made in which $100 million would be paid to both parties but the 49-0 Mayweather turned it down.

In January, Mayweather hit out at the Irishman's demands, saying, "I'm pretty sure he hasn't even made $10 million in a MMA bout. How can a guy talk about $20 million or $30 million if he's never made $8 million or $9 million?"

UFC president Dana White stepped in on the beef between the two and made an offer of $25 million each but Mayweather the very next day declined, taking it as an insult and telling White, via TMZ "You're a fucking comedian", which evidently shows that Mayweather believes that he is worth a lot more than that. An understandable attitude, bearing in mind the former five-division world champion allegedly stated his net worth to be $650 million, with Forbes magazine stating that it is more likely to be $340 million.

With an official announcement regarding the fight expected to be made any day now, TMZ Sport put together a compilation video, charting the history between the two fighters:

Who would you back if the pair finally step into the ring together? Would Mayweather extend his record to 50-0 or would McGregor pull off one of the most shocking upsets in boxing history?
