It has emerged that Canelo Alvarez has tested positive for trace levels of Clenbuterol - a banned substance often used by athletes to cut body fat while retaining muscle mass.

The WADA lab believe it is due to meat contamination - something that has impacted dozens of athletes in Mexico down the years.

A statement from Golden Boy said the following about the situation:

Canelo himself has admitted that he has tested positive for the drug - but insisted that the meat contamination is a factor and he will 'submit to all the tests that require me to clarify this embarrassing situation.'

"I am an athlete who respects the sport and this surprises me and bothers me because it had never happened to me," Canelo said via TMZ.

"I will submit to all the tests that require me to clarify this embarrassing situation and I trust that at the end the truth will prevail."
