Chris Eubank Sr has said he "would love to play" the next James Bond after a petition emerged online backing him to play the legendary character.

The former super-middleweight world champion was hailed as a "national treasure" in a campaign to see him play one of the most iconic roles in British cinema.

And the man himself has admitted that he "would love to play Bond" after Daniel Craig retires.

"I think the petition is brilliant," Eubank Sr said about the petition. "Of course, I would love to play Bond. In some ways I have always been an actor.

"Ever since I have been in the public eye I have been acting, hoping to entertain."

Eubank Sr as Bond? It's a stupendous idea.

But if he can't land the Bond role, he'd be happy to play a villain.

"I played the longest running villain in boxing history so that would also be amazing," he added.

"To do the role, you have to have total commitment to your character, and I have shown I can do that."

Eubank Sr has already played a villainous role during his professional boxing career. He was the villain of the piece in his rivalry with Nigel Benn.

The petition boasts 732 signatures.

"Chris Eubank is not only a national treasure but also one who has seen action for most of his life, and his larger-than-life personality would be perfect as the next James Bond," the petition reads.
