Antonio Brown's troubled start to his Oakland Raiders career took another weird turn when he posted a video of a phone call with coach Jon Gruden.

Just when all seemed to be well and Brown was back with the team, he put up a clip on You Tube which featured an apparent exchange with Gruden.

The Raiders head coach was heard asking "what the hell is going on man?" and it's unclear whether he knew the phone call was being recorded to post online.

Brown told his head coach: "Just a villain all over the news man."

Gruden called Brown "the most misunderstood human being I've ever met in my entire life" and added "I brought you here because you're my favourite guy."

The video was one minute and 56 seconds long, and Brown also wrote in the caption: "With all these false narratives antagonizing me, it's time for me to control my own narrative.

"Show the world I'm not the bad guy. Show the world you can free yourself from the lies and become your own person. "I am not just AB the football player, I am Antonio Brown, the person, who paved a way for himself to be in charge of his own life. Free me!"

The star wide receiver was involved in a heated clash with Raiders general manager Mike Mayock on Thursday and that led to him being sent home and missing practice.

Oakland planned to suspend Brown and withhold some of the $30million of guaranteed money from his contract, according to widespread reports.

But all seemed to be well 24 hours later when he turned up at their base in Alameda and apologised to team-mates with captains standing by his side.

Head coach Gruden told media: "Antonio is back today. We're really excited about that and ready to move on."

When asked about Brown playing in Oakland's season opener against Denver Broncos on Monday night, Gruden added: "That's the plan, yes."

Then things took another twist when the video went up on You Tube at 6.45pm on Friday night in California.

"I don't know why it's a question of me being a Raider," Brown was heard saying on the phone call. "It's like - do you guys want me to be a Raider?"

"I'm more than just a football player, man. I'm a real person. It ain't about the football; I know I can do that. I show you guys that on the daily. This my life. Ain't no more games."

It's been a summer of controversy since Brown joined the Raiders from the Pittsburgh Steelers earlier this year.

His altercation with Mayock came after he was fined for missing parts of training camp over a helmet dispute.

Brown also missed some of the pre-season activities because he injured his feet by not wearing the correct footwear in a cryotherapy chamber.

Raiders fans must be counting down the seconds to Monday's season opener and to finally talk about football again rather than the off-field drama.
