Chelsea handed Anthony Gordon blow as Spurs set to enter race in January after winger confirms Everton contract rejection

Chelsea handed Anthony Gordon blow as Spurs set to enter race in January after winger confirms Everton contract rejection

Chelsea face competition for Everton star Anthony Gordon if they are to make a move in January with Tottenham Hotspur interested.

Chelsea face competition for Everton star Anthony Gordon if they are to make a move in January, with London rivals Tottenham Hotspur interested in the winger, according to reports.

Gordon was subject of heavy interest from the Blues in the summer transfer window, with Chelsea seeing several bids rejected for the youngster.

He has started the season on good form, netting two goals as Everton look to beat the drop this campaign.

Despite interest in the summer, former Chelsea boss and current Everton head coach Frank Lampard revealed that a deal was ‘never close’.

Lampard said:"It never got close to happening and that is great because it has shown where we are coming from and it shows where Anthony is mentally as a player."

However, it is thought that Chelsea could return for Gordon in January.

It was revealed that the attempt to sign the winger was led by Todd Boehly, acting Chelsea sporting director and chairman.

Head coach at the time, Thomas Tuchel, was not keen on bringing the Everton player to Stamford Bridge.

Tuchel has since been dismissed from his role at the club and replaced by Graham Potter.

This could have a significant impact on any potential future move for Gordon, if Potter wishes to pursue the transfer.

If Chelsea are to make a move, they will face competition from familiar rivals, Spurs.

As reported by Paul Brown, Chelsea will be looking to the forward in January.

However, other ‘top clubs’, such as Tottenham, will be ‘sniffing around’ the player also.

The player’s advisor has already informed Premier League sides that he will not sign a new long-term deal at Goodison Park, insisting that he is open to a move.

It remains to be seen whether Chelsea will re-enter the fray for Gordon, but with him seen as a club target for the future, the transfer is certainly one to keep an eye on.

The new owners at Stamford Bridge have already flexed their financial muscles, breaking the record spend for a single window in the Premier League.

The signings are not going to stop there, however, with Boehly keen to strengthen his squad.

Potter will face Crystal Palace in his first Premier League match as Chelsea head coach and will be looking to improve on performances under Tuchel this season.
